Bushnell Engage EDX 10x50 Binoculars review

Hello and welcome to the binocularsguru website. If you’re seeking a comprehensive review of the Bushnell Engage EDX binoculars, you’ve arrived at the perfect destination.

I was looking for a mid-price 10×50 binoculars last November and stumbled upon these pairs. I have tested it since one year and now I am in a position to comment whether these binoculars are worth your money or not.

Here, we’ll dive into the world of Bushnell Engage EDX 10×50 binoculars.

But before we get into the specifics of this particular model, let’s take a closer look at the company behind these optics.

About Bushnell

Bushnell Corporation, headquartered in Kansas, United States, was founded while on a trip to Japan in 1948 by its founder, David P. Bushner.

The company specializes in optics and imaging, offering high-end sport optics, GPS devices, game cameras, microscopes, ski goggles, and sunglasses.

Bushnell caters to nature enthusiasts, whether you’re a birdwatcher, hunter, or fisherman.

Notably, the company is environmentally friendly, using lead-free glass, avoiding plastic, and utilizing 100% recycled paperboard packaging.

About the Engage Series

Now, let’s focus on the Engage series, to which the EDX 10×50 binoculars belong and the model we tested on our outdoor adventure.

The Engage series is known for its all-weather durability, thanks to Bushnell’s exclusive Exo Barrier lens coating, which repels water, oil, and fog. Within this series, you’ll find three versions: X, DX, and EDX.

  • Engage X: These binoculars come with fully multi-coated air-to-glass lens surfaces and the Exo Barrier lens coating.
  • Engage DX: In addition to the features of the X model, the DX version includes dielectric coatings on the prism.
  • Engage EDX: This model goes a step further, offering ED Prime glass prism face coating, better ultra-wide band coatings, and a lockable diopter adjustment.

The Engage EDX series includes four models: 8×42, 10×42, 10×50, and 12×50.

All Bushnell sport optics products come with a lifetime warranty without any questions asked.

For Engage binoculars, this lifetime is defined as 20 years. It’s worth noting that all models in this series are made in China.

Design and Build

Now, let’s take a closer look at the Bushnell Engage EDX 10×50 model’s design and build.

These binoculars boast an elegant design with stylish details. The exterior features some distinctive lines and markings, showcasing the manufacturer’s name and the series.

The chassis is made of metal and protected with rubber armor, offering optimal protection against shocks and scratches.

Also, You’ll notice that the rubber armor are textured on the sides, providing a firm grip even in wet conditions.

What I experienced is that The ergonomic design and thumb depressions at the back make these binoculars comfortable to hold and carry all day.

Also, They are designed to withstand wet conditions, being 100% waterproof according to the IPX7 rating. Additionally, Bushnell’s Exo Barrier ensures lenses are protected from water, oil, and dust.

Regarding prism systems, These binoculars feature electric-coated Schmidt-Pechan roof prisms with a single-hinge design.

They measure around 13 centimetres in width and 16 centimetres in length, weighing approximately 830 grams. You can also attach them to a tripod by removing the screw cap at the bottom.

Lastly, according to me While they have a sleek design, the bridge and focusing wheel could be positioned a bit higher for better

Also, there are some more drawbacks to consider. The build quality doesn’t match that of the Legend M series. The objective covers don’t provide a secure fit and tend to fall off easily. The eye cups are a bit too prone to movement.

Additionally, the weight of binoculars is slightly higher than the 29.2 oz claimed by Bushnell; my measurement is 30.2 oz.

Nonetheless, they remain quite compact for a 10×50 model.

Optical Properties

Optically, these binoculars provide a bright and sharp image, thanks to the fully multi-coated optics and electric prism coating.

When tested by an expert friend optician, We can safely say that these pairs have approx 92% light transmission, resulting in a bright image with vivid colors.

The image remains sharp at the center and reasonably sharp at the edges. The binoculars offer a good field of view, measuring 113 meters at 1000 meters.

Also, The low-light performance is impressive. While there is a slight presence of chromatic aberration, it’s hardly noticeable unless you deliberately search for it and possess a discerning eye, and even then, it only appears in very bright, high-contrast lighting conditions.

Now, regarding IPD, I found that the interpupillary distance is a bit long, making them more suitable for individuals with larger faces.

Eyepiece Properties

The eyecups are turnable and clickable, with four positions for adjustment.

While they are covered with rubber, they could have better stability as they tend to fold easily with pressure. This might be an area for improvement.

Focusing

You can focus the binoculars with the central focus wheel, which features thick ribs for a better grip, even with gloves.

The turning is easy and can be done with a single finger. However, the build quality of the focusing wheel could be improved.

The focusing is relatively slow, which is better for hunting but still suitable for birdwatching.

What’s Included in the Box

In the box, you’ll find a durable soft case designed to protect the binoculars when not in use. However, there’s only one pocket, and it lacks an additional strap for the case.

You’ll also receive a neoprene neck strap for the binoculars and a fabric bag for added protection, a feature not commonly found in binocular packages.

Additionally, there’s a rubber eyepiece and objective lens covers, with the objective lens covers attaching securely to the barrels.

There’s also a sticker with the Bushnell logo, short setup instructions, and a complete instruction manual available on Bushnell’s official website.

Warranty

Considering the price range, I believe Bushnell should provide a lifetime warranty (20-year lifetime warranty) instead of the limited warranty currently offered.

Both the Legend Ultra HD and Legend M series come with an unconditional warranty and are currently available at a lower price point.

The Sweet & The Sour

In summary, the Bushnell Engage EDX 10×50 binoculars offer several advantages, such as fully multi-coated lenses, waterproof and fog-proof construction, Exo Barrier lens coating, ergonomic design, and suitability for eyeglass wearers.

However, there are a few areas for improvement. The eyecup stability and the build quality of the focusing mechanism could be enhanced. Additionally, the package lacks a strap for the binoculars case and a cleaning cloth.

Overall, these binoculars provide great value for their price and are suitable for observing details, making them a recommended choice for both hunting and birdwatching enthusiasts.
